GoalSir, September 21, 2024 – Liverpool legend Barnes recently gave an interview to the media, suggesting that Liverpool goalkeeper Kelleher might seek to leave the club in January.
This summer, Kelleher expressed his desire to become the first-choice goalkeeper in an interview, but it’s difficult for him to secure a regular starting position behind Alisson. Furthermore, with Liverpool’s recent signing of Mamardashvili, Kelleher’s place in the pecking order will only slip further once the latter officially joins the team.
Barnes said, “I think it’s interesting that when you have the best goalkeeper in the world, Alisson, you have to perform exceptionally to replace him. I don’t think Kelleher has illusions about becoming Liverpool’s top goalkeeper, but he will consider his future because Alisson won’t be there forever, and the signing of Mamardashvili has raised questions about Kelleher’s own future.”
“Mamardashvili was one of the best goalkeepers in the European Cup, and he will join the team next year. During his time at Valencia this season, he will work on certain aspects of his game.”
“Kelleher will feel that he’s good enough to take over Alisson’s position when he leaves. Maybe that’s why he expressed frustration in the previous interview – it felt like a knee-jerk reaction, knowing that the number of games he can play in is limited.”
“Maybe he will consider a transfer in January, but I don’t think Liverpool will allow that to happen. I think he will stay, and I think he will fight for his playing opportunities.”
